Bring a photograph of the room
Before choosing a plant, take a picture of the spot where it will live and note the direction of the windows. The corner that looks best for a photograph may not give a plant what it needs. Describe the actual light to the shop team, along with how much care you can reliably give it.
Scale matters as much as species. A single plant with a clear silhouette can be easier to place than several small pots distributed around a room. Measure both the available floor area and the height. Remember to include the planter.
Think past the party
For a dinner, put larger plants at the edges of the room, where they will not catch a chair or interrupt a route. Keep the center of the table available for food, water and conversation. A plant beside a window or near a lounge area can give the room a sense of occupation without becoming a centerpiece.
Decide where it will go after the event. If it is coming home with you, choose for that room first. Ask about care, drainage and delivery before buying, particularly for a large specimen.
